From Inspiration to Reality: The Urbanspace Kitchen

August 23, 2012

The whole team at Urbanspace is beyond thrilled right now. The showroom has gone through a big transition, having just completed the construction of our brand-new custom kitchen. We took one corner of the showroom and turned it into a masterpiece of form and function - perfect for any modern chef. Our team created the concept, layout and design details, and then worked with international and local resources to make it truly unique. The main component is the walnut cabinetry produced by Honea Woodworks. They really bring our style - modern, sleek and warm - to the space. We knew we wanted to use something striking for the backsplash, so we kept the countertops simple with white Silestone, but included a cutting-edge detail (no pun intended) with a sliver of light coming through between the wood cabinet end and where the counter wraps down to the floor.

Here's some fun mid-construction shots:

Cabinets being built:

Beautiful Walnut, just for us:

Base cabinets installed, countertops and upper cabinets going in, and a giant plastic tent to keep the dust out of the showroom:

Here are the original drawings created using SketchUp, followed by the finished photos. The only thing that changed was the scale of the wallpaper...we felt the larger scale worked better for the space.

We love the industrial and utilitarian feel of the stainless steel appliances by Thermador from Harway Supply, and we wanted bring out that feeling in the sleek, full-width drawer and door pulls from Hafele. But then it was time to turn up the volume and imbibe the personality we've become known for in the kitchen - modern organic edginess. This was obviously achieved with the stellar vinyl wallpaper from Flavor Paper and the custom live-edge pecan slab that has become our dining table. The juxtaposition of these 2 elements really brings a unique life to the space, and the wood slab appears to float, while also cutting right through where the countertop wraps down....a truly unique detail.

And the cherry on top - the Nuova Simonelli Aurelia Commercial Espresso Machine. A little taste of Italy right here in our showroom.

We're still waiting to receive the final finishing touches - the eclectic mixture of chairs and stools that are all different but all white. This allows us to show an interesting variety, but the crispness of the white makes them work together and highlights the countertop too.

Here they are:

So come by and take a look...maybe get a little inspiration for your own kitchen. Our design team would love to help you create something equally amazing. Have a cappuccino while you're here and enjoy yourself. You might even be lucky enough to drop by when we're baking a batch of cookies....
